On Her Own Land – Historical Photographs by Hanna Heinilä
2 September – 25 October 2026, Parvi
Hanna Heinilä (1890–1981) was a rural photographer who documented her surroundings and the people of her home region of Luvia in the 1910s and 1920s. Her photographs capture everyday life, work and celebrations – people seen as part of their own community. In Heinilä’s images, individuals appear both at festive occasions and in ordinary daily tasks, on their own land.
The exhibition presents a selection from a collection of nearly 500 glass negatives, which remained forgotten for decades and was saved from destruction only in the 2010s. Heinilä’s photographs are both powerful documents of local history and an example of distinctive early photographic expression. The exhibition offers views of life in Luvia, its coastal and rural landscapes, and women’s photographic work at a time when photography was rare and highly valued.
The exhibition is based on a presentation previously shown at the Rauma Art Museum and the Luvia Local Heritage Museum. The exhibition at the Satakunta Museum’s Parvi is organised by Luvia Seor ry.
