Archaeological Cultural Heritage

As a regional responsibility museum, the Satakunta Museum also handles expert and official duties related to archaeological cultural heritage in its area. The museum’s archaeologist conducts field inspections and provides guidance and advice on issues related to ancient remains and prehistory.

The prehistoric heritage of Satakunta is rich and fascinating. In total, over a thousand archaeological sites from all prehistoric periods and parts of the region are known.

Ancient remains are protected by the Antiquities Act (295/1963). It is prohibited to excavate, cover, or otherwise disturb ancient remains. According to the law, all artifacts over 100 years old with no known owner are considered ancient objects and are state property. Underwater cultural heritage and shipwrecks over 100 years old are also protected by law. In Finland, the use of metal detectors is prohibited in and immediately around archaeological sites.
